Antecedents of Company Innovation

Innovation constitutes the process that involves conversion of opportunities to practical utilities (Tidd et al., 1997). This study seeks to evaluate the antecedents of company innovation as well as their impact on financial performance. The research is premised on the sample of firms located in Spain and Portugal. The methodology adopted to analyze the significance of types of innovation was linear regression (variations between Spain and Portugal). To examine the extent to which variables of innovation capacity determine turnover (financial performance), recourse to probit regression models was made. The results indicated considerable variations regarding inhibitors and antecedents of innovations within both countries. The unveiling of products into emerging markets solely proved significant in Spanish firms whereas innovation in processes and products were significant in the two sets of firms from the Iberian region. The significant impetus that the study makes to the literature pertains to the ideal knowledge concerning the factors affecting innovative capacity within firms situated in border areas. Notably, Spain and Portugal experience similar economic difficulties and challenges, as the economic crunch that struck Europe had a huge impact on peripheral countries. In view of this, it is important to comprehend the behaviors of enterprises situated within such economies. Additionally, investigation of innovation aspects would be ideal to examine cooperation factors as well as the presence of cooperative ventures that complement innovation activities involving Spanish and Portuguese firms. Because the research had small sample of 61 firms, it was difficult to generalize it to the findings. However, it proved feasible to contrast innovation capacities practiced in both countries, thus further research with a large sample is required to achieve robust conclusions that can be generalized to other countries outside Europe.

“To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job. To summarize the summary of the summary: people are a problem.”
